Is Social Media the New Search Engine?
Remember when Google search was the main answer to everything? Well, plot twist: a massive chunk of the internet has quietly swapped the search bar for the scroll.
Consumer behaviour towards social media is changing once again because people aren't just liking and sharing anymore – they're searching. For restaurant recs, skincare dupes, hacks, even for the best social media marketing agency to hire. Yes, really.
People Actually Search on Social Media?
Yes, Adobe's 2026 report is already proving it.
49% of US consumers have used TikTok as a search engine.
Sprout Social's research backs this up too with nearly one in three consumers now start their search journey on a social platform instead of Google.
Even Google has clocked it. Prabhakar Raghavan, the tech giant's own SVP, admitted that roughly 40% of young people turn to social media instead of Google Search or Maps when they want to find, say, a good lunch spot.
When the search engine is quoting stats about losing search behaviour to social apps, you know change is coming.
Why Is This Happening?
A few reasons, and none of them are shocking once you think about it:
Visual proof beats text descriptions. A 15-second video of a café's actual vibe tells you more than a wall of Google reviews ever could.
It's faster and more human. Social search feels like asking a friend.
Algorithms are getting smarter. Platforms like Instagram now index captions, spoken audio, and on-screen text. That means your content can literally be watched, "read" and ranked.
Trust lives in comments. People scroll to the comment section for the real, unfiltered opinion before they trust a caption.
So Does Google Lose Its Crown?
Not yet. Google still holds the overall authority when it comes to broad, high-intent, and transactional searches. It's the encyclopedia of the internet, and that's not disappearing overnight.
But authority is no longer a monopoly. Social platforms are becoming the go-to for discovery and inspiration – and that behaviour keeps creeping into categories Google used to own outright.
Who's to say where this goes in five years? The lines are blurring, and betting everything on one channel is starting to look a little old-school.
What This Means for Your Brand (Like, Right Now)
If your business isn't appearing when people search on social media, you're already behind. This isn't about vanity metrics anymore. It's about:
Keyword-rich captions and content structure. Yes, keywords matter on social media now. Your captions, alt text, and even your bio need proper social media marketing thinking behind them, not just witty one-liners.
Consistent, searchable content creation. Answering real questions your audience is typing (or speaking) into that search bar. Consider FAQs disguised as reels, carousels that read like mini-guides.
Discoverability across formats. Video, carousel, and text all need to work together so the algorithm and the human can actually find you.
With this staggering social search adoption numbers climbing each year, it's genuinely high time to rethink your social media strategy. Waiting until everyone else means you're playing catch-up in a game that's already moving fast.
How Do I Get Started in Social Media?
Start by actually auditing what's out there. Search your own business name, your product, or your industry in social media to see what comes up. Is it you, your competitor, or a whole lot of nothing?
Scroll through your last ten posts and read the captions; does it actually say what the content is about? Check your bio too if it mentions what you do and where you're based.
Don’t overlook your Instagram Name field either – the bold text beside your profile photo. Use it to state what you do and, where helpful, where you’re based, such as what we do ‘Singapore Social Media Management Agency’.
The real starting point is just an honest look at whether your brand is searchable right now, or simply scrollable.
Did Someone Mention Social Media?
How convenient, this happens to be our whole world. We've spent years in the trenches figuring out what actually gets a brand found on social media. From F&B and retail to education and wellness, we've created searchable content and helped brands stay top of mind.
Google might still be holding the crown for now, but the future of search is clearly multi-platform.
If you're ready to make sure your brand is discoverable wherever your audience is actually searching, let's talk and get you prepared for whatever comes next.
