Why Do Likes Feel Pointless on Instagram Now?

If you're still refreshing your Instagram post every ten minutes to watch the like count climb, we need to talk.

That number stopped being the flex it used to be. It's been quietly demoted for a while now. Operating as a social media agency means this is the challenging myth we have to bust with clients.

Your content might perform alright on likes and still be invisible to 90% of the people who should be seeing it. That's not bad luck. That's the algorithm telling you that you're optimising for the wrong currency.

Likes Are the Participation Trophy Now

Instagram's own product lead has said it outright likes carry some of the lowest weight in how content gets distributed today. In some breakdowns, likes account for roughly 5% of the ranking weight, while a single DM share can be worth ten to fifteen likes in the eyes of the algorithm.

Saves aren't far behind, weighted at three to six times more valuable than a like depending on the surface.

So what actually carries weight in 2026?

  • Watch time and rewatches. Instagram is measuring how long someone stays on your Reel and whether they loop back for a second look.

  • Saves. A save is one of the strongest signals of lasting value a piece of content can send. It sort of means someone wants to share or watch it later.

  • DM shares. When someone sends your post to a friend without being asked, that's the algorithm's favourite kind of trust fall. It's now considered the single strongest ranking signal on Reels.

  • Profile visits and comments with replies. These tell Instagram a real human is curious enough to dig deeper, not just double-tapping on autopilot.

Instagram wants proof that people are doing something with your content, not just glancing at it and moving on. That's a much higher bar than a like, and it's exactly why your engagement numbers might look "off" even when your content quality hasn't dropped.

Social Media Habits That Will Work in 2026

Knowing the algorithm changed and doing something about it are two very different things. Here's what we build into every client's content plan, whether we're writing captions for a Pilates studio or plating up a food brand's next carousel.

Make your first three seconds worth rewatching a.k.a hook. Research on Reels performance shows that content surviving the first three-second gut-check gets a completely different shot at distribution than content that doesn't. Open with the punchline, the transformation, or the plot twist, then let the story catch up.

Write captions that invite a save. If your caption is purely decorative, you're leaving reach on the table. Give people a reason to bookmark it: a checklist, a recipe breakdown, a step-by-step routine, a "c nudge. This is precisely what we do for our wellness and education clients — turning a nice-looking post into something someone actually wants to find again next week.

Design for the forward. Ask yourself before you hit publish: would someone send this to a friend? Content that solves a very specific, relatable problem (a parenting hack, a skincare myth, a "why is my flight always delayed" rant) tends to get shared in DMs far more than generic inspiration quotes ever will. That share is now doing more heavy lifting for your reach than a hundred likes combined.

Stop Chasing the Vanity Metric

Sorry, we didn’t mean to make it sound like “likes” are worthless – they're still a nice little dopamine hit and a signal Instagram hasn't fully abandoned. But building a content strategy around them in 2026 is a bit like judging a restaurant purely by how many people glanced at the menu outside.

The real story is about who walked in, who came back, and who told their friends about it.

This shift also explains why brands sometimes panic when their engagement numbers drop after switching strategies, when in reality they're just being measured on a different, more meaningful scale now. It's less about performing for the algorithm and more about creating something worth someone's actual time.

We've walked wellness studios, restaurants, cafes and education clients through exactly this transition, rebuilding their content around watch time, saves and shares instead of chasing likes that were never going to convert into bookings or bites anyway. If your numbers have you confused, or you just want a social media agency that explains the strategy instead of hiding behind jargon, that's what we do for our clients every day.

Making you seen isn't a slogan for us, it's the actual job, and we've done it enough times to know exactly which levers to pull.
