Why You Need a Good Social Media Strategy
We have to be honest. We feel kind of sorry for Google. How many times can a search engine answer “What’s a social media strategy?” before it goes a little nuts?
If you’re a small business, we know that you’ve done that exact same Google search a time or two. And we don’t blame you! If you’re DIY-ing your business’ social media, you’ve been told that you need a social media strategy… Even if you’re not 100% sure what it is, or why you need it.
A social media strategy isn’t just about posting a certain kind of content at a specific time, and crossing your fingers (and a couple of toes) that it goes viral. It’s about what you’re posting, why you’re posting it, where you’re posting it, who you’re trying to target, and how it performs.
Set your Social Media Goals
If you’re starting a social media strategy from scratch, we want you to think both big. What do you want to achieve with your social media? Are you:
Increasing brand awareness?
Generating leads?
Growing your audience?
Driving traffic to your site?
None of these answers are wrong, but you need to understand which one applies to you as it will change how you approach your overarching strategy.
Social Media Audit
It’s time to look at your socials and dive deep by doing a self-audit. It might feel a little uncomfortable, and maybe even a little embarrassing (we’ve all made some questionable posts at times), but an audit will let you understand what content resonates with your followers, set new goals, and identify areas of opportunity.
Know Your People and Where They Are
If your ideal client is a Gen Z, you’re not going to spend your valuable time making content for Facebook (or at least we hope you’re not). Knowing your ideal client and where they spend time online will let you create platform-appropriate content and get more eyes on your brand.
It’s Content Creation Time
A solid editorial calendar will help you plan the kind of content you’re going to create for your socials and when it will be posted. A quality calendar will have a balance of a variety of types of content, but don’t worry, no dancing reels or TikToks required. By creating a content bank, you’ll have easy access to relevant content instead of staring at your phone, wondering what the heck you’re going to post today.
Embrace the Numbers
And we’re not talking vanity metrics. Thousands of followers are great… unless they’re not converting. We’re talking about analysis of things like your click-through rate, cost-per-click, and conversion rates.
If by now even doing your taxes sounds better than creating a social media strategy, we’ve got you. Anything socials related is kind of our jam at For The Love of Socials, and we love ourselves a good strategy session. So let's make a plan together to get more eyes on your account, and get your business noticed.
